A Pittsburgh One of a Kind Covered Deck with Curved Bar
Project Overview
This Sewickley deck transformation is the result of homeowner vision combined with deck builder planning and execution to create an award-winning luxury outdoor space all can get excited about. For this family, creating an outdoor space that allowed them to host friends and family in a backyard they can be proud of was paramount to them.
Our team created a project that checked all the boxes: a covered deck area with outdoor kitchen, a separate open area for sun basking, outdoor heating to extend useful time, under deck water proofing, and an attention-grabbing curved bar. By combining these various deck components the team at SelectDecks delivered a solution that not only solved the backyard problem but also gave this family a solution built for both everyday living and hosting.

Vision
Like many Pittsburgh homeowners our family knew they wanted and needed to do something. They even had an idea of where to start, but they didn’t know how to tie it all together or what was even possible. After some questions and answer time it became clear what the main elements were that we needed to include:
- Covered deck they could use for multiple seasons during the year
- Open deck area for when they did want to enjoy the sun directly
- Outdoor kitchen for friends/family gatherings
- Cohesive transition from driveway to backyard
- A custom, conversation starting type of feature
Design Features
Part of our job at SelectDecks is to make transformed backyards look like they were part of the original house, but also do that in a way that the space stands on its own. We accomplish this by obsessing over attention to details such as finishes, scale, and transitions.
1. Composite Deck:
Blending composite decking with brick can be a challenge. This project blended Deckorators Voyage (Sedona) perfectly. The colors of the decking played on the browns in the brick as well as the surrounding landscapes and trees.
2. Stone Veneer Columns:
We decided to introduce another texture to the project by wrapping the deck columns in stone veneer. Using that same stone veneer we transitioned that to use on the outdoor kitchen area as well. Lastly we matched the kitchen countertops with the column caps for a married look and feel.
3. Curved Bar:
Homeowner wanted something that caught people’s attention, mission accomplished. Curving & bending deck boards wasn’t new to our team, but using them for a raised bar area certainly was. Making it stable and incorporating trim details and lighting into it made it challenging, but it produced a design feature that we are very proud of. Not only does it look cool, but it was done with purpose. Our homeowners now have a dedicated seating or standing area for gatherings.
Materials and Brands
1. Deckorators Decking:
Why? Color hues that matched brick, traction, and surface heat of deck board.
2. Infratech Outdoor Heaters:
Why? Extend the usefulness of the deck into the fall. Infratech heaters project infrared heat directly onto people and surfaces on the deck allowing them to use it when the temperatures drop.
3. Synergy Finished Ceiling:
Why? Synergy’s tongue & grooved finished ceilings offer an upscale look not many others can match. It also offers a natural product to help balance the man made decking, trim, etc.
4. Tru-Scapes Lighting:
Why? Low voltage landing transforms any deck project from good to great. But also it provides a certain level of security and safety for homeowners. This lighting can change colors, brightness, etc by using a simple app.
