A Complete Pittsburgh Backyard Transformation

This project was fun partially because it was the dream of one of our social media followers. A young Pittsburgh couple had been following us for some time, and finally, after planning and saving for a while, decided to go all in on this transformation. Initially, when they contacted us, they couldn’t pinpoint what they wanted to do from a design standpoint but they knew they wanted some specific features such as an outdoor kitchen, a covered area, and a luxury under-deck area. They just didn’t know how to tie it all together, which is where we came in. We started with the deck because that’s typically the hub of all our projects. From there, we were able to incorporate the outdoor kitchen they coveted into another area of the deck. Once we had the envelope of the deck, we transitioned to the under-deck area. Not only did we finish under the actual deck, but we also expanded the patio area to include a custom gas/wood fire pit area. Finishing it all off was a tranquil landscaped area complete with boulders and a custom waterfall.

This project began with a vision rooted in lifestyle—creating a functional, beautiful space where a young Pittsburgh couple could gather with family, relax after work, and enjoy every season outdoors. While they had a wishlist—an outdoor kitchen, covered seating, and a cozy under-deck retreat—they weren’t sure how to bring it all together. That’s where our team stepped in. By listening closely and guiding the design from the deck outwards, we shaped a space that reflects their needs, style, and long-term plans. The result? A seamless outdoor living experience built to serve their everyday life and future memories.

Custom Deck

Like many of our deck projects, this deck was designed and constructed with family in mind. We needed enough space for large family gatherings, but not just a large deck for the sake of having a large deck. We wanted to be smart with our size and budget. The covered area needed to be large enough to comfortably allow dining tables and outdoor furniture. We strategically laid that area out to accommodate their plans and incorporated some luxury features like speakers and outdoor heaters to help with the Pittsburgh climate.

Outdoor Kitchen

In addition to the covered area, we also added an open deck area that served as home to the outdoor kitchen. This young couple went all out, the kitchen includes a new gas grill, storage space, trash bins, side burners, a flat top grill, a cooler, stone veneer, granite countertops, and a desk area so the homeowners could work outside when they wanted to enjoy their new backyard but still be productive at work. 

Under Deck & Patio

After incorporating a waterproof system to the deck, we then finished the under deck area. Again we designed and constructed with purpose, including luxury upgrades such as speakers, televisions, outdoor heating, recessed lighting, and low voltage accent lighting as well. The ceiling was finished with a tongue & groove high end finish, including remote controlled fans. The paver patio selected was a mix of large slabs and accent pavers to give the patio a timeless look and feel, which flowed out to the fire pit area. Again we used accent pavers to highlight the fire pit area which was equipped with a gas starter and log burner for those summer nights and fall days in Pittsburgh. Lastly we added a custom waterfall to the side of the house to hide a hill the homeowner couldn’t figure out what to do with. This completed the resort look, feel, and sound of the under deck area.
